How we know

When the power goes out, phone masts, routers and data centres without backup power go dark, and a country's internet traffic drops. Cloudflare sees that drop in its own traffic, checks what caused it, and lists it in its Outage Center. We take the ones caused by a power outage and show them here and on the live map (⚡).

That makes this a list of large outages: a whole country, or a region big enough to show up in internet traffic. A power cut in one town, or one that backup power bridges, is not in it. The cause is added by hand, so an outage can appear here a few hours after it began; our own probes on the live map show the drop in the internet straight away.
