BLACKOUT MAP

Natural disasters and the internet

When the ground shakes or a storm comes ashore, does the internet stay up? Every strong earthquake (M6+) and every orange or red GDACS alert, with what our probes measured in each country right after.

How we check

Earthquakes come from USGS, storms, floods, eruptions and wildfires from GDACS. For each one we look at the countries it hit: every national internet outage our probes and IODA measured, every regional outage near it, and every large power outage.

An outage counts as a disruption when it reached "partial outage" or "blackout" and started within 24 hours. Before 16 October 2026, when our own probes started, we use IODA's measurements.
